Anarchy as Delta community engages herdsmen in gun battle

Umunor community in Ossissa Kingdom, Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State, on Monday evening apparently refused to watch armed herdsmen massacre them as has been the case in many parts of Nigeria.

Youths from the community engaged the marauding herdsmen in a fierce gun battle that generated palpable apprehension among the people of the community.

While it was not certain if there were casualties in the clash, the information is that the exchange of gun shots came as a result of failed attempt by some suspected herdsmen to invade the community.

Farmers in the area and herdsmen are said to have been in crisis for some time resulting in many of the community members relocating to neighbouring towns and villages.

According to an eyewitness report, but for the quick response of security agents deployed to the area, the situation would have snowballed into destructive situation.

According to a security source, police are aware of the precarious situation in the area as a result of incessant clash between farmers and herdsmen.

He said it was because of the situation that a security post was stationed in the area after the intervention of the council chairman and the Police Area Commander who visited the village on Tuesday morning.
