President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval rating as released recently by a notable survey agency, NOIPolls, has dropped to 39 per cent.

This result shows his approval rating for the month of June 2016, which the agency says dropped 41 places compared with his very high rating of 80 per cent in the month of October 2015.

According to NOIPolls, the latest result equally shows a nine-point drop when likened to the rating in May 2016, which stood at 48 per cent.

The approval rating of President Buhari across five geopolitical zones, when compared to the month of May also shows some drop.

While the North West zone at 61 per cent recorded the highest approval rating, followed by the North East zone with 59 per cent, the South East and South South zones rating of eight per cent and 24 per cent correspondingly were the least.

NOIPolls stated that responses on the president performance on key indicators were also not encouraging as results showed a high level of disappointment.

The agency puts his per cent score in the areas of conflict resolution at 28, agriculture and food security 21, health care 20, education 18, economy 15, job creation 13, infrastructure 13 and poverty alleviation 11 per cent.

According to the agency, the latest rating is the lowest Buhari has had since NOIPolls started its approval ratings of him 13 months ago.

The president however did better in the areas of national security scoring 48 per cent and 45 per cent in the area of fight against corruption.

Regardless of the fact that President Buhari’s rating in the area of national security was a bit on the average, NOIPolls said there is need for the president to do more in conflict resolution, majorly in the areas of inter-communal or intra-communal conflicts like the persisting ones between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in some parts of the country.

The latest poll is the thirteenth approval rating of the president’s job performance and the sixth in the monthly series of governance polls for the year 2016. It shows the feelings and views of Nigerians as regards how the president has fared in carrying out his assignments.

And while detailed analysis of the poll revealed that almost four in 10 adult Nigerians (39% ) approved the president’s job performance, 41% of the respondents disapproved his job performance whereas 20 per cent were indifferent.

The poll also revealed that there are high hopes among many Nigerians that the incessant Fulani herdsmen and farmers’ conflicts in the North Central, South East, North East and South West zones, and the militants’ activities should be adequately addressed.

In its conclusion, the survey, said at least four in 10 Nigerians (39 per cent) approved the president’s job performance in June 2016 which showed his lowest approval rating since being sworn in as president in May 2015.

NOIPolls said the opinion poll was conducted in the week of June 27, 2016 and that it involved telephone interviews of a random nationwide sample adding that 1,000 randomly selected phone numbers owned by Nigerians aged 18 years and above, representing the six geopolitical zones in the country, were interviewed.

Ripples Nigeria gathered that the present poor rating of President Buhari may be due to the day to day worsening of the economic situation of the country, his perceived lopsided appointments, accused indifference on the issue of herdsmen attacks on farmers, alleged denial of promises, slow reactions in making vital policies, inability to begin fulfillment of promises made to Nigerians, supposed biased war against corruption among many others.
