Peter Obi explains Igbo leaders’ grievance over his nomination

Vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi, has asked Nigerians who are aggrieved over the apparent show of shame displayed by Rev Ejike Mbaka to refrain from attacking the Adoration clergy.

Mbaka had in a viral video described Obi as being stingy and said that he and PDP presidential candidate may lose 2019 general elections.

Mbaka made this statement on Sunday after he had begged Obi to publicly make a donation to support projects in his Enugu State Adoration centre. Obi’s preference to discuss with Mbaka alone on the project he will undertake did not go down well with the controversial Catholic priest, hence his prediction.

But in his response in a statement through his media aide, Val Obienyem, the former governor of Anambra State said he did not feel bad about the priest’s pronouncement, adding that there is always something positive to gain in every situation.

He therefore called on his loyalists and other Nigerians who are pained by the action of the priest to refrain from attacking him, but instead pray for God to lead him aright.

“Please let us leave Fr. Mbaka alone; our duty to him is prayers for God to lead him aright. While one may disagree with him, we should always acknowledge that he speaks and acts from the higher perspective of wisdom,” he said.

Obi, who had during the encounter with Mbaka, hinted that he had a reverend sister and a reverend father as elder and younger siblings respectively, went further to say, “I have full respect for men of God and will always remember them in my prayers. When they go wrong as humans, subject to human frailties, ours is not to castigate them, but to pray to God to lead them aright.”

According to Obi, donations to churches are “appreciation of God’s love and benevolence to us, they attract more rewards when done secretly.”

Meanwhile, Mbaka had after the encounter with Obi, also met with Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and others, who the priest said were at the Adoration Ground to represent President Muhammadu Buhari.

He had told Ganduje and those with him, “How I wish you were here when I was speaking to Peter Obi representing Atiku, I know that Obi went out from here almost disgraced. All the people Buhari is giving allocation what qualification do they have that we don’t have? Who among them have done for him what we are doing for him? It is because of this Buhari that we told Peter Obi all these rubbish he heard today. And I want to tell you, if Buhari will remain ungrateful to this ministry, he is going nowhere. Atiku is waiting for him somewhere, and the only thing that can stop Atiku is spiritual, so you people should go and come back, you should not take us for granted, I am speaking with spiritual mandate.”
