EGYPT: 50 policemen sentenced to 3 yrs in prison for going on strike

50 policemen who dared to stage a strike against their working conditions in January this year have all been sentenced to three years each in prison by an Egyptian court.

The striking policemen who were arrested in January after organising a strike to denounce an interior ministry decision to reduce their vacation days and increase their work hours were later referred to Egypt’s general prosecution.

Before the defendants were handed judgement by the court, they were charged with striking, inciting violence and intimidating security forces.

According to Egypt’s official news agency, MENA reported the court sitting in the south of Sinai also terminated 40 of the defendants from their jobs and fined them 500 Egyptian pounds each in addition to a sum of 6,000 collectively for damages.
