Federer 'not disappointed' after US Open exit

Roger Federer failed to make it to the semifinal of the ongoing US Open after a quarterfinal defeat to Juan Martin del Potro early Thursday in New York.

The 24th-seed Del Potro, who beat Federer to win his only Grand Slam title in same tournament in 2009, won 7-5 3-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-4 to reach the last four in 2017.

Federer was due to meet rival Rafael Nadal if he had conquered the Argentine, but his loss means the duo will end another year having never played each other at the US Open.

The Swiss is however not disappointed having ‘struggled throughout’ to make it to the last-8 of the tournament.

“I had struggled too much throughout the tournament to think too far ahead,” Federer said.

“In some ways I’m actually happy I made the quarters, so I’m not disappointed, because it’s been a good run this year already.

“Unfortunately I ran into a guy who was better than me today.”

Del Potro now goes on to face top seed Nadal, who on Wednesday beat Russian teenager Andrey Rublev to reach the semis.
