Ibrahimovic handed 3-match ban by FA

Following Satuday’s Premier League match between Manchester United and Bournemouth which was littered with ugly physical challenges, United’s forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been handed a three-match ban by the English Football Association on Tuesday.

Ibrahimovic was caught on video elbowing Tyronne Mings in retaliation to an earlier stamp on his head by the defender during the match that ended 1-1 at Old Trafford.

It was the Ibrahimovic’s incident which was witnessed by Mings’ team-mate, Andrew Surman, that led to the sending off of the midfielder, who pushed the Swedish striker to the ground, and consequently shown a yellow card, which the Referee realised was his second after a long delay, and eventually pulled out his red card.

A statement on the FA’s website reads: “Zlatan Ibrahimovic will serve a three-match suspension with immediate effect after he admitted an FA charge of violent conduct and accepted the standard penalty.

“It follows an incident in or around the 44th minute of the game between Manchester United and AFC Bournemouth on Saturday (4 March 2017).

“The misconduct was not seen by the match officials at the time but caught on video.”

The 35-year old has been part of the striking force of Jose Mourinho’s team this season, and has scored 26 goals in 38 appearances for United since joining on a free transfer from Paris St-Germain in July.

The ban, however, means that Ibrahimovic will miss United’s FA Cup quarter-final clash against Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and will also miss their league games against Middlesbrough and West Brom, which follows after.
