ANAMBRA ASSEMBLY CRISIS: Party backs 'impeached' Maduagwu, suspends 'factional' Speaker, two others

Rita Maduagwu has described her impeachment as “a bundle of illegality,” and vowed to continue as the House Speaker.

Calling those who allegedly impeached her as “rascals,” Maduagwu said, “Nobody can impeach me because I have not committed any offence.

“They didn’t have any power known to any law to impeach me. They need two- thirds of our members to impeach the Speaker or the governor. So, I’m still the Speaker.”

Two hours after her purported impeachment, Maduagwu, was able to regained access to the chamber and held a session with 11 members.

She thereafter adjourned the House sitting till November 15.

The development is coming days after about 18 members of Ondo State House of Assembly also impeached the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the state Assembly.

However, while the new elected Speaker of Ondo Assembly, his deputy and some of the lawmakers who took part in the leadership change are still on the run over threats to their lives, the impeached Speaker has continued to preside over the Assembly plenary.
