Moments after the meeting, the committee members in a joint statement said, “We [the Arab League] will confront the decision by seeking a [UN] resolution, an international one, to recognise a Palestinian state on 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital.

“We have specific requests, the most important of which is the recognition of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital according to the June 4, 1967, borders.”

The decision by Trump to recognise Jerusalem as the new capital of Israel has also forced authorities in Palestine to recall its envoy to the United States.

Palestinian officials have previously said they will “no longer accept” any peace plan put forward by the US following the unilateral declaration on December 6 by Trump.

According to Riyad al-Malki, the Palestinian foreign minister, discussions would take place “to set the decisions needed by the Palestinian leadership in the coming period regarding our relations with the US”.
