Messi wins La Liga Player of the Month for April

Argentinian forward Lionel Messi was impressive in La Liga last month, and his effort has paid off the Barcelona star picked up the Player of the Month award on Friday.

The award was delivered by Luis Herrero Borque, the director in Catalunya of Santander Bank – Sponsors of the Spanish league.

Messi scored eight goals in seven games in April, and was especially impressive at the Santiago Bernabeu, where he scored a brace and his last minute goal helped Barcelona win the game.

Messi’s double in the El Classico ensured the La Liga title race remains well and truly alive, with the two sides level on points going into the final few games.

Messi has 35 La Liga goals to his name so far in the current campaign, which keeps him at the top of the chart for the Golden Boot in Spain.

Suarez, his Barcelona team-mate, is the next nearest with 27, while Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has 20.

Messi previously won the Player of the Month award in January 2016, the first time he had secured the triumph, and this he has won for April makes it a second time ever.

The last time, that is January last year, he scored just six goals taking Barcelona to the top of the La Liga table.
