Peru beat Australia

South American side Peru defeated Australia 2-0 in their final group game at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Sochi, Russia on Tuesday afternoon.

The win became their first at a World Cup finals since beating Iran 4-1 in June, 1978, but it meant nothing at the Russia showpiece as they already crashed out.

Australia needed to defeat Peru and hope France beat Denmark in order to qualify for the next round, but Peru’s Andre Carrillo opened the scoring with a 15-yard volley 18 minutes into the game.

The Aussies struggled to create clear-cut chances, as Peru captain Paolo Guerrero added to their woes.

Guerrero, who is playing in the tournament after his 14-month drug ban was overturned by a tribunal, spun and shot into the far corner just five minutes into the second half.

Australia’s Tim Cahill failed to score – a development that would have placed him together with Pele, Klose and Ronaldo as players that have scored in four different World Cups.

With the win, Peru finished third in the Group above Australia, while France qualified won the group after their goalless draw with runners-up Denmark.
