Security votes is part of corruption, cancel it, Ribadu says

Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has called for total cancellation of security votes for governors and the president.

The former EFCC boss pointed this as one of the moves that will demonstrate there is real fight against corruption in Nigeria.

He also urged Nigerians to stop celebrating criminals and that government must ensure it has the will to prosecute and to apply sanction on those found to be corrupt.

He stated this on Monday in Abuja, at the 2016 conference of the Nigerian Institute of Management, adding that leadership at all levels must show the necessary example, so that any fight against corruption in the country will succeed.

“There should also be the will to apply the sanctions. As I have pointed out several times, lack of will by the political leadership to prosecute the war against corruption takes us to nowhere. The political leadership should be determined and it should be seen to be serious about it.”

According to Ribadu, all government expenditures have to be budgeted and extra-budgetary spending criminalised.

“Security votes should be completely phased out. Honesty has to be lifted to the position of a prized and rewarding national value. Criminals should not be celebrated as heroes on account of their wealth,” he said.

This is coming on the heels of the lunch of “Change Begins with Me’’ programme by President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government, which has seen Many Nigerians calling on the President to show example of the change he preaches.
