Spain to implement constitutional provision to end Catalonia seccession bid

The previously untapped Article 155 of Spain’s constitution which will enable Madrid to seize powers from the wealthy northeastern region of Catalonia, according to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, will be implemented.

Listing four goals for the decision such as; a return to legality, to recover normality and co-existence, to continue with economic recovery and to have an election in Catalonia in “normal political circumstances”, Rajoy made the comments while addressing a crisis meeting with his cabinet to decide how to put an end to Catalonia’s secession drive.

Carles Puigdemont, Catalan President, declared independence on October 10 days after staging a disputed independence referendum met with heavy police crackdown from the Spanish national police and civil guards.

Puigdemont however, suspended the declaration to encourage talks with Madrid after an ultimatum followed but to date, no direct talks have taken place.

Meanwhile, the streets of Catalonia’s capital were once again filled with noise moments after Rajoy announced that Spain would assume control of Catalonia’s government.

An estimated 450,000 people on Saturday gathered in Barcelona’s centre to protest against Madrid’s move to impose direct rule over the , a move regional officials described as a “coup”.
