Supreme Court sacks first-class monarch in Oyo

The Supreme Court on Friday, dethroned the Eleruwa of Eruwa, Oba Samuel Adegbola.

The deposed Eleruwa is a first-class monarch in Oyo State.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan, the state capital, had in 2013 dismissed the monarch’s bid to retain his throne.

The monarch and six other persons brought a suit against one James Olatunde Idowu and four others following a judgment delivered by Justice Ladipo Abimbola of the State High Court on January 26, 2011, that he (Eleruwa) was wrongly picked for the throne.

Justice Monica B. Dongban-Mensan, in her ruling, thanked the counsels, Demilade Olaniyan and Tona Akande, for their industry, and dismissed the appellants’ appeal.

The judge said the apex court panel was satisfied with the process in which the earlier court conducted the case.

“It thereby complied with the court process and affirmed the judgment of the High Court,” she said.

The deposed monarch was elected in 1998, following his predecessor, Oba Bolanle Olaniyan’s death in 1994.

He was removed by the Oyo State High Court on the grounds that his selection, nomination and approval by the state government were irregular, null and void and this ruling was affirmed by the Federal High Court.
