Much optimism has been expressed by President Donald Trump’s administration to achieve denuclearization in North Korea during his first term in office.

The statement was made by a senior State Department official on Thursday and it reads in part:

“We still believe that this is all achievable within the President’s first term, and that’s the timetable we’re working on,” the official said. “We have discussed extensively the outlines of the calendar that allow us to do that, and it is doable.”

The official’s statement comes in after a failed summit last month between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The meeting ended without any progress to the US goal.

According to experts, it might take up to 10 or 15 years for North Korea to completely denuclearize, considering how technical the process is. However, they see Trump’s administration as having articulated great objectives.

After a conference meeting last week in Vietnam, a State Department official said the US and North Korea are currently discussing “about things we really want to be discussing” but the official admitted that the two countries do not share a definition of denuclearization.

Trump has however declared “no rush” on denuclearization while sanctions have been put in place to ensure that North Korea is committed to giving up its weapons.
