Why we can’t screen Amaechi now –Senate

Published

Feelers from the Senate plenary have revealed that only three ministerial nominees are slated for screening during plenary today.

According to the Senate order paper, only Barrister Adebayo Shittu, Hajia Khadijat Abba Ibrahim and Professor Daramola were slated for screening.

Earlier, it had been speculated that 8 nominees were slated to be screened today with the former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi slated as number 3.

Offering reasons as to why Amaechi will not be screened today, Senate spokesperson, Dino Melaye stated that the nominees to be screened today were pruned to three, to allow for a more thorough procedure.

According to him, the number was streamlined to ensure more details could be acquired form the nominees.

The Senate also noted, that its committee addressing the petitions against Amaechi is yet to submit its reports to the full plenary.

Also speaking further on why Amaechi was left out of the list of those to be screened today after being left out on different occasions, Melaye noted that the APC caucus in the Senate appreciated the petition against Amaechi as a party, and support him.

He added that APC caucus was in the process of reaching out to the PDP caucus of the Senate to lobby them in efforts to resolve the issues, and avoid a rancorous plenary when Amaechi appears tomorrow for screening.
