World leaders condemn Kabul explosion

The deadly explosion which tore through a highly secure diplomatic district in Kabul, Afghanistan leaving no less than 80 people dead and 300 others injured has been condemned by world leaders.

Moments after the attack, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said in a Twitter post that employees of the German Embassy were wounded in the attack and that one Afghan security guard was killed.

“Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims. We wish those injured a quick recovery,” the foreign minister said. “It’s particularly despicable that these people were targeted.”

Foreign minister of Qatar, Mohammed bin Jassim Al-Thani also condemned the attack which he described as “appalling” while Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India tweeted saying; “thoughts & prayers to those affected by the attack.”

According to Afghan interior ministry, the huge blast of the bomb hidden in a sewage tanker occurred close to the German embassy in the Wazir Akbar Khan area of the capital on Wednesday morning.

The incident sent clouds of black smoke spiralling into the sky near the presidential palace and foreign embassies. Meanwhile, the vast majority of casualties are expected to be civilians.

Blast near the German embassy left many injured and moments after the explosion, the Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani, condemned the attack saying; “The terrorists, even in the holy month of Ramadan, the month of goodness, blessing and prayer, are not stopping the killing of our innocent people.”

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack which is regarded as the deadliest in the Afghan capital since an ISIS suicide bomber killed nearly 100 people at a protest last summer.
