Tottenham sets up semi-final clash with Ajax, sends Man City packing

Arsenal defeated English Premier League champions Leicester City 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night to keep up their top four chase.

The Gunners took all three points from the game after a late Robert Huth own goal gave them victory against a stubborn Leicester side.

The home supporters seemed set for a disappointing evening before Nacho Monreal’s shot found the bottom corner via the Huth’s chest only in the 86th minute.

Arsenal are now three points behind Manchester United and four behind fourth-placed Manchester City having played the same number of games. But at least one of the Manchester pair will drop points when they meet on Thursday.

But Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is not concerned about Thursday’s game, as his target of finishing top four is what matters.

“Every win gives you a little more momentum,” the Frenchman said after the victory.

“I don’t have a preference for the Manchester derby, we don’t have to look much at the others. We just have to look after ourselves. The target is clear for us.”

Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur kept up the pressure on Premier League leaders Chelsea as Christian Eriksen’s superb long-range strike secured a 1-0 victory for them against Crystal Palace.

Spurs had struggled to break down a disciplined Palace side for much of the game and it looked like they would have to settle for a point.

But Eriksen fired into the bottom corner from 30 yards late on to keep Spurs within four points of Chelsea with five games remaining.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino told reporters after the match: “It is a very good three points.

“We are going in the race for the title and it is fantastic for us to get the three points here. It was a great goal by Christian Eriksen. I think he can repeat it again many times.”

The win means Tottenham move on to 74 points, and have fierce rivals Arsenal to play in their next league game.

In the other PL game of the night, Middlesbrough edged past Sunderland 1-0, as the latter are now on brink of relegation.

Middlesbrough, who registered their first victory in 2017, have struggled at home this season and prior to this match had scored just 13 goals at the Riverside – the lowest of any top-flight team. But they are now six points behind Hull City above the relegation line.
