In his first match in charge, head coach of Sunshine Stars, Duke Udi, led his side to a 2-1 defeat to MFM FC in a matchday 26 fixture of the Nigeria Professional Football League on Wednesday.
Udi was hired last week as replacement for Austine Eguavoen, who stepped down from his managerial post at the Akure side less than five weeks after taking the appointment.
With relegation staring at Sunshine Stars in the face, 41-year-old former Nigeria international Udi clearly has a difficult task ahead, and the loss on his debut is definitely not encouraging.
It was Tchato Giscard who opened scoring for MFM in the 27th minute before Stephen Odey doubled the lead with a 79th-minute penalty.
At stoppage time, the visitors managed to net in a consolation as Ajibola Otegbeye converted from the spot to make the final score 2-1.
But the home team held onto their lead till the end, and consequently climbed to second position with 43 points.
Elsewhere, League leaders Plateau United maintained their place at the top of the table on 48 points after they secured a 1-0 win at home against Nasarawa United on Wednesday.
The only goal of the game was scored by Emmanuel James from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute after Peter Eneji was fouled inside the box.
