The executive governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki has accepted to host the 20th edition of the National Sports Festival which is billed to hold in 2020.

The governor, who made the acceptance speech at the closing ceremony of the 19th edition in Abuja on Sunday, also assured Nigerians that his state has the capability to put up a good show in two years’ time.

Edo was just one of the four states that bidded to host the Games in 2020.

The other states were Delta, Cross River and Imo, to whom the Minister of Youth and Sports, Barr. Solomon Dalung, expressed gratitude for considering to host.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it is with humility and delight that I accept to host the 20th edition of the National Sports Festival in 2020 in Benin city,” the governor stated at the national stadium, Abuja.

“I want to thank the organizing committee for this decision, and to assure them that we have the capacity and the capability to host the Games.

“We (Edo state) have perhaps one of the best governance systems in sports in this country. And over the last couple of years, we have been undertaking massive refurbishment of sporting infrastructures in our state.

“We have no doubt that we have the capacity to host, especially as we have always been part of the sports festival over the years.

“We understand and appreciate the goals and objectives of this festival, and I make a commitment on behalf of the people of Edo state, that we will keep to the objectives of the Games,” he said.

Obaseki was sworn in as governor of Edo State on 12 November, 2016; hence full preparations ahead of Benin 2020 can be handled by his administration.
