Iwobi shifts focus to Arsenal after ‘tournament to remember’ in Egypt

Super Eagles forward, Alex Iwobi says he only has few days to relive the team’s outing at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) before shifting focus to club football.

The Arsenal star put up a good performance for his country, and helped the Eagles win a record-extending 8th AFCON bronze medal in Egypt.

Iwobi played in every match during the campaign, and scored once in Nigeria’s 3-2 win over the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the round of 16.

“I’ve had a tournament to remember but you only get a few days off to refresh then switch focus to club football again,” Iwobi told BBC Sport.

Iwobi’s Arsenal finished fifth in the Premier League last season, and reached the final of the Europa League, where they got beaten by rivals Chelsea.

“The target and challenge is always the same, it will be a new season but our determination will be to win every game and competition,” the 23-year old continued.

“Of course, we want to be better than last season, where we had some positives by going unbeaten for 22 games in all competitions and the plan will be to stay consistent throughout the season.”

He added: “Arsenal is an amazing club, I have been there since primary school and it’s a place I call home and passionate fans who are like family members.

“I’m looking forward to the new season with this great club and hopefully we can make our fans smile at the end of the season.”

The Gunners will begin their campaign this season with an away game at Newcastle United on August 11.
