Kenya hotel attack toll now 21, plenty others unaccounted for, Red Cross says

Kenya’s Red Cross has revealed that the death toll arising from a militant attack by al-Shabab on a complex at Dusit hotel in Nairobi, the country’s capital has risen from 15 to 21.

According to the Red Cross, the explosion and gunfire heard at the upscale hotel and office complex on Tuesday afternoon forced hundreds to flee the scene of the incident.

The Red Cross added that at least 50 people believed to have been in the compound remained unaccounted for, raising the possibility of a higher final death toll.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta stated hours ago that calm has been restored in the area after the militants who launched the attack were all killed.

“The security operation at dusit complex is over, and all the terrorists eliminated,” President Uhuru Kenyatta told the nation, looking drained and grave.

“As of this moment, we can confirm that 14 innocent lives were lost through the hands of these murderous terrorists.”

Reports say the attack saw the gunmen blast their way into the hotel and office complex which sent workers diving under desks to save their lives.

The attack was later claimed by feared militant group al-Shabab.
