Premier League giants, Liverpool lost to La Liga side, Atletico Madrid, in the Audi Cup final after losing on penalties on Wednesday.

It was a low-quality display by both teams, as Liverpool struggled to make any sort of impact for large periods of the match but snatched a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Keidi Bare put Atletico ahead in the 33rd minute of the game before the Reds were handed a lifeline seven minutes to the end, with a late penalty which Roberto Firmino duly converted.

Atletico went on to win 5-4 on penalties as Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson saw his penalty saved by goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya in the shootout.

Jurgen Klopp’s men reached the final of the four-team competition after thrashing Bayern Munich 3-0 on Tuesday, but failed to be as impressive a day later.

Atletico, on the other hand, reached the final after grabbing a 2-1 victory over Napoli, who then stunned Bayern 2-0 to finish in third place.

Liverpool will now prepare to face Athletic Bilbao in Dublin in their final preseason friendly.

And they will begin their Premier league campaign away to Watford on August 12.
