STAR SIXES: Amuneke wishes former Super Eagles colleagues luck

Former Nigerian international Emmanuel Amuneke hopes that Nigeria wins the ongoing Star Sixes tournament holding at the O2 Arena in London.

It is the maiden edition of the six-a-side competition, which is designed for former internationals.

Amuneke, who couldn’t make it to the tournament due to other engagements, commended the Star Sixes initiative before wishing his compatriots luck in the football tournament.

“The Star Sixes tournament is a welcome development. That’s the way things should be done,” Amuneke was quoted to have said by Complete Sports.

“I’m not part of our team due to other commitments, but I wish my friends and former colleagues luck in the competition.”

The Nigerian side, led by Austin Jay Jay Okocha, defeated China 3-2 in their opening match on Thursday, and will face Italy in their second group game on Friday before playing Brazil.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni scored two quick goals for Nigeria before Daniel Amokachi added the third to give the Ex-Eagles a perfect start at the ‘Legends World Cup’.

“I really hope they can defeat Italy tonight. I don’t know about revenging our defeat to the Italians in USA ’94 World Cup. Even if the Nigerian side wins, it will not be the same as the main World Cup,” added the one-time African Footballer of the Year.

Ex-Eagles will play against Italian legends tonight – against names like Alessandro Del Piero, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Marco Delvecchio and Simone Barone.

The Nigerian side includes Peter Rufai (goalkeeper), Celestine Babayaro, Uche Okechukwu, Joseph Yobo, Taribo West, Garba Lawal, Victor Ikpeba, Julius Aghahowa and Daniel Amokachi.
