1. Hate Speech Bill would have been dead on arrival if Tambuwal was still Speaker —Osoba

A former Governor of Ogun State, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, has condemned the controversial Hate Speech Bill being considered in the Senate. Osoba, a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) vowed to lobby the National Assembly to kill the bill. 2. INEC begins distribution of sensitive materials in Kogi

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), on Thursday, began the distribution of election materials for Saturday’s Kogi West supplementary poll and the Ajaokuta Federal Constituency rerun election. The materials which were stored at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Lokoja, were taken delivery in the presence of INEC officials, including the National Commissioner for Kogi, Kwara and Nasarawa states, Mohammed Haruna, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. James Apam, Representatives of the concerned political parties, personnel from security agencies and reporters. The Nigerian Senate has again refused to recognize the Caretaker Committee of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). Chairman Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Godiya Akwashiki, Thursday stated that the Senate would not have anything to do with the committee “because it is not a legal entity.” While briefing newsmen in Abuja, Akwashiki said the Senate was waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari to inaugurate the newly confirmed members of the NDDC board. 6. Wike’s aide hands him 15-page resignation

Tekena Zephanian-Altraide Thursday resigned his appointment as the Senior Special Adviser to the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Physically Challenge Matters. In a fifteen-page resignation letter to the Governor, Zephanian-Altraide said it appeared that he was disengaged of his appointment even before his resignation following the action of the governor on his office. He complained that since his appointment in 2016, his office had never had a running cost. According to him, he struggles to pay his members of staff their allowances from his personal salary of about N328,000. Read more

7. EFCC arraigns Mompha’s alleged accomplices for money laundering

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Thursday arraigned the duo of Kayode Phillip and Hamza Koudeih before Justice Muslim S. Hassan of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, on a 25-count charge of conspiracy and money laundering. A statement issued by EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, said the defendants, who are high-valued targets in Organized Cyber Syndicate Network, were arrested for their alleged involvement in various cyber crimes and money laundering. 8. Reps call for end to burning of oil seized from illegal bunkering

The House of Representatives has moved to end the burning of seized bunkered petroleum resources due to its impact on the environment. Following a motion moved by Francis Waive during plenary on Thursday, the house asked the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) to immediately stop the method of disposal of seized crude Oil by the military. This followed the absence of the trial judge, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court, Lagos, who reportedly was absent for a conference. 10. Sokoto gov grants amnesty to perpetrators of 8,000 ghost workers’ scam

Governor Aminu Tambuwal-led government of Sokoto State has granted amnesty to people benefiting from no less than 8,000 ghost workers discovered in the state. The government also extended the same gesture to workers who received abnormal salaries under the state’s payroll. This was announced in a statement on Thursday by the state Commissioner for Finance and head of the state Committee on Integrated Payroll and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), Abdussamad Dasuki.
