Europa League: Goalkeeper Romero escapes injury, as United defeat Zoryo 2-0

During the second half of UEFA Europa League clash between Zorya Luhansk and Manchester United on Thursday that ended 2-0 in favour of United, the fans behind the goal post of the visitors threw fireworks aimed at the direction of goalkeeper, Sergio Romero.

In the event which took place around the half-hour mark, the home fans threw what looked like a smoke bomb, that produced a loud flash and bang clearly visible and audible on the television coverage.

The goalkeeper, however was prowling another area of his box, and so escaped what could have resulted to an injury, as the referee immediately called for a stop in play, checking with Romero to see if he was okay.

The encounter was already in doubt before the game started, as the pitch was frozen and there was a likelihood of the game being called off.

In his pre-match press conference, United boss Jose Mourinho was quoted to have said, “They are putting some warmth on it, but it’s very difficult and people cannot make miracles.”

“Let’s hope everything goes OK. The pitch is hard and very icy. I think Uefa know the conditions of the pitch and everybody knows that in mid-December the conditions in Ukraine and Eastern Europe are more
difficult,” he added.

Zorya will likely face disciplinary actions from UEFA over the crowd troubles.
