Nigerian army says it has arrested 7 herdsmen for open grazing in Benue

Group accuses soldiers of aiding herdsmen invasion of Benue

No less than seven herdsmen have been arrested in separate operations in different parts of Benue State, so says the Nigerian Army in a statement released on Thursday.

The Nigerian Army also revealed in the statement by the Director, Army Public Relations (DAPR), Brig-Gen. Rogers Chukwu that the herdsmen were nabbed by its troops on Operation Ayem Akpatuma on February 28, for allowing their cattle to violate farmlands in Yelwata and Anyilamo communities.

“Exercise Ayem Akpatuma (Cat Race) has continued to record tremendous success as herdsmen are being arrested for destroying farmlands and large number of weapons recovered in different locations, where the exercise is conducted.

“Troops of Sub-Sector A, deployed at Yelwata while on routine patrol along road, Gbajimba-Kaseyo-Awe in Benue State, arrested 4 herdsmen grazing in farmland on Wednesday 28, February 2018. Four cutlasses were recovered from the herdsmen.

“Similarly, troops of Sub- Sector B deployed at Anyilamo while on fighting patrol along Buruku-Uba-Abeda-Ameh and Fadama Kuturu also in Benue State apprehended three herdsmen destroying farmland with their cattle,” Chukwu added.

The arrests are coming days after Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, revealed in Makurdi than no less than 60 farmers were killed last week in attacks led by herdsmen.

Ortom disclosed that armed Fulani herdsmen, recently invaded his village in Guma Local Government Area and killed more than 60 people, mostly farmers, while scores of others were rendered homeless.
